Hi, I'm Linda Garrett. We had a question that begins this way: We're a small company in a small town in a conservative state. Maybe big cities like LA and New York need to train on transgender issues and things like that, but that training just doesn't seem to apply here. Besides, it's making my employees think badly of the HR department, and they're saying I'm taking things too far. What should I do? Can I skip this kind of training?

Well, here's my answer: I recommend training on all aspects of discrimination, including education about protected characteristics. The thing is, if any employee is singled out for disparate treatment, that's not good for business. It's not good for morale, it's not good for production, and it certainly is going to undermine the integrity of your entire workgroup. So, I wouldn't skip it. I would include all forms of discrimination in your training, and I think that will put you on firm ground going forward.
